Isaiah’s Prophecies about Restoration and the Messiah

Isaiah is one of many prophets who have spoken out against Judah’s sins and predicted captivity by foreign nations. Already the northern tribes have been taken away. If there was any cause for optimism during the reign of Hezekiah, it has now been lost amid the paganism which Manasseh has fostered. Therefore Isaiah once again takes to the streets to warn against idolatry, sorcery, and even astrology. But now in his last days, and with most of Israel already in foreign exile, Isaiah shifts his emphasis. He projects himself into the period of Judah’s exile. He writes as if he were viewing God’s people after Jerusalem’s destruction. He sees their despair in Babylonian captivity. But even now, through God’s revelation, Isaiah sees the restoration of Israel, their return from captivity to a prosperous nation, and the rebuilt city of Jerusalem.

Isaiah declares that his mission at this time is to bring comfort to those already in exile and to those about to be taken captive. God has a further purpose in Isaiah’s prophecies: he wants to reveal what is about to happen so that, when it does, the people will know that it is God who is punishing them and God who will deliver them. He does not want them to attribute anything to the pagan gods which they worship. To make sure there is no mistake about it, God specifically reveals the name of Cyrus the Persian king, who 150 years later will be God’s instrument in bringing about the restoration.

Isaiah’s prophecies serve further to help the people look forward to the coming of the Messiah and his everlasting kingdom of justice, righteousness, and salvation. The restoration messages are in an appropriate context for the messianic prophecies. Just as Israel has been a suffering servant of God, so too the Messiah will be a suffering servant for all people, including Gentiles. Just as Israel will be restored in prosperity, so too will the faithful believers of all time be blessed in the Messiah’s kingdom. And just as the oppressors of God’s people are themselves to be destroyed, so too will God’s judgment eternally destroy the wicked. And yet for the righteous, God is preparing a place where all will be eternal joy and peace. So in many ways the present punishment of Israel and her promised restoration are analogous to the Messiah’s kingdom, the final judgment at the end of time, and the eternal home of the saved.

In all of Scripture, Isaiah’s prophecies concerning Israel’s restoration and the coming of the Messiah may be the most marvelous, wonderful, comforting, inspiring, optimistic, and encouraging words ever read by a believer—particularly a believer who has either endured great personal suffering or known the despair of spiritual exile. It continues to be a solemn warning to those who would persist in unrighteousness, but it is a refreshing message of hope to all sinners willing to acknowledge their guilt and lead repentant lives in service to God.

[40:30] 就是少年人也要疲乏困倦,强壮的也必全然跌倒;
